The Refugee Story In Statistics…
There are over 60 million people who are displaced around the globe today, while 42,500 people are uprooted and forced to flee for their lives each day. There are 19.5 million refugees in the world.
The average time of displacement is 17 years.
51% of refugees today are children.
From October 2015-16, the United States resettled around 85,000 refugees, which is more than all other countries combined.
The United States is slated to receive around 110,000 refugees between October 2016-17.
Portland is receiving around 1,800 refugees this year, taking in a small part of the 1% of the world’s refugees that are resettled in a safe country. Refugees resettled in Oregon are expected to become self-sufficient within eight months, as their funding ends at that time.
While these numbers can be disheartening, it’s worth remembering that hope is also a key part of the story for the refugees that come to Portland.
